Jess M. Collen

Jess Collen is a trademark lawyer, practicing in New York for over 35 years. He is also a featured Forbes.com contributor,  writing on all aspects of intellectual property. Mr. Collen has represented clients in U.S. District Courts and federal Courts of Appeal across the United States.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA), and  is a past chair of INTA’s Planning Committee, and has lectured at conferences in the USA and abroad.

Among his honors and awards over the years, Mr. Collen was recognized by Trademark Insider magazine as one of the Top 50 trademark attorneys in the United States.  He has been included in the annual listing of New York Super Lawyers in the area of intellectual property in each of the past eight years.  In 2012, U.S. Secretary of Commerce John E. Bryson appointed Mr. Collen to the New York District Export Council. 

In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Collen is a principal of consulting firms Ounce Health and Namevet.

He co-founded the highly successful  Blockchain based company COGNATE, the first enterprise to use blockchain to document trademark use worldwide.

Jess was also a co-founder of LIFE PROJECT FOR AFRICA which  supported the building of two health centers to provide services to the poor in Tanzania and for the better part of a decade, served as the organization’s CEO.

He is married to the author JF Collen, who is also a trademark lawyer.  They have four children and reside in New York and his native New England.  He graduated from Boston College with a degree in Political Science and Speech Communication.
